  • Just Peachy

I don't know the last time I've been so excited for Pantone to release the color of the year. This year's color brings back some fond 80's junior high / high school memories. Peach and turquoise were my colors long before they were cool (I'm looking through Momma's old photo albums for proof). House Beautiful describes this year's color, Peach Fuzz, as a light, delicate shade that sits between pink and orange. This soft, heartfelt hue expresses the desire to nurture kindness, compassion, and connection—all while fostering a deep coziness as we seek a peaceful future. Before we continue, can we just stop and appreciate Princess Di in this peach ensemble on a visit to Australia in 1983 (Getty Images). I mean, who didn't love Princess Di? I love Pantone's description of this year's color: "PANTONE 13-1023 Peach Fuzz captures our desire to nurture ourselves and others. It's a velvety gentle peach tone whose all-embracing spirit enriches mind, body, and soul. In seeking a hue that echoes our innate yearning for closeness and connection, we chose a color radiant with warmth and modern elegance. A shade that resonates with compassion, offers a tactile embrace, and effortlessly bridges the youthful with the timeless." Of course, you will be seeing FUZZY peach all over Flying SR this year, including a few samples of peach colored wild rags: You know I'll be adding some peach colored sunnies to my collection, including these peach colored cat eyed sunglasses: If y'all come across a vintage pearl snap like the one I found on Etsy, please let me know. I would love to add something like this to my wardrobe! And before you think I'm completely, wholeheartedly binging peach, you're not wrong (the only peach I won't be partaking in is Boone's Farm Sun Peak Peach or Fuzzy Navel...how are we all still alive?)! I will be watching out and sharing these fashionable colors this spring: Rooibos Tea Orangeade Watercress Desert Flower Chambray Blue Pastel Lilac Marlin Blue Lemon Drop Mint Capri And I didn't forget the home goods! if you're looking for colors for your home, look at persimmon, pearly white, and friendly yellow. Well I hope you have a peach of a day and remember life is too short to take yourself seriously! Big love, Red

  • God's Love Never Changes

It's been a while since I've shared here - so I am making an effort in 2024 to do better! As I was sitting down yesterday morning to start my tasks at hand, I was visiting with my big sissy and reading my devotional. I told her that my devotional hit right where it hurts. God had me standing still before I even got through the second sentence. What I received from this devotional was.... When we feel the most happy and steady in God's promises, fully trusting, fully believing and fully rooted in His love has a DIRECT correlation to our connection to Him, our time spent with Him and His word. When we're deeply rooted, we feel strong, joyful, and purposeful! What better gifts can we all for? Who wouldn't want that every day? And then the gentle reminder jumped off the page: God's love for you NEVER changes. Wow. Just sit in that for a little while and "may you seek God throughout your day, and may you be sweetly surprised by the joy, peace, and well-being that fills your heart and soul." • Long Live Cowboys!

I don't even know where to begin - I could write an entire book about this man. So, I'm going to start out small. We're hosting a "fun"raiser in honor of Milo Wilson, world's greatest cowboy, rancher, gentleman, father, grandfather, and friend. As the National Day of the Cowboy approaches, the Sul Ross State University ANRS & Rodeo Exes Reunion, and the 99th Annual Ski Hi Stampede (all this weekend), we are going to donate a portion of all sales to the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund. My grandfather (pictured left in 1979) served as president of the Ski Hi Stampede, as well as other positions, including arena director. My grandmother also served as the rodeo secretary (if you haven't seen the photo of Bob "Bulldancer" riding his mule into my grandmother's rodeo office, let me know). Milo was at the very first Stampede in 1919 and served as the Parade Marshall in 2001, having attended each and every Stampede until is death in 2004. Technically, this year should be the 102nd Stampede, but the rodeo was put on hold during World War II and again last year, 2020, due to global health concerns. We've always been supporters of the JCCF, but when my grandfather passed away in 2004, we experienced first-hand the organization's support and kindness. Thanks to Mike Cervi, PRCA stock contractor and family friend, donations were made in my grandfather's name and the JCCF were among the first to extend their condolences. Next year, 2022, will be the 100th Ski Hi Stampede, and holds the title of the oldest professional rodeo in Colorado. We are excited to be going and representing our grandparents during the events of the weekend. Over the next 12 months, you will definitely be hearing and seeing more about Ski Hi and Monte (Vista, Colorado) through our stories on the blog, photos shared on social media, and some fun new products we'll be sharing this fall. As part of the fundraiser, a portion of all sales will be donated to the JCCF through August 31, 2021. A 10% discount code is available and good through that date (COWBOYS). All purchases made through August 31 will also include a 15% discount code to be used on subsequent purchase and good through December 31, 2021. Long live cowboys and the legacies they left behind. • But I Don't Want to Eat Dirt!

Apparently, my post about Brussels sprouts brought about more attention than custom order wild rags this week! I love food, but have always felt fear when forced to eat green peas and brussels sprouts. BS taste like dirt smells. Until last night! I fixed us Brussels sprouts that used a LITTLE bacon grease and some butter and they were actually REALLY good. So good, I managed to get Mama D (who HATES BS) to eat two. So I thought I would share the recipe for safe keeping for those of you who have reached out to me wanting to overcome your dislike for these little veggies. Enjoy! RED _____ Brussels Sprouts with Bacon and Butter (From Keto Diet - Fat Burning Recipes for Women) Ingredients: 6 slices thick-cut bacon, cut into 1/2 inch pieces 1 1/2 pounds Brussels sprouts (about 24 medium), halved 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 2 tablespoons butter, softened Instructions: Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cook bacon in large cast iron skillet until almost crisp. Drain on paper towel-lined plate; set aside. Drain all but 1 TBS drippings. Add Brussels sprouts to skillet. Sprinkle with 1/4 tsp salt and 1/4 tsp pepper; toss to coat. Spread in skillet. Roast 30 minutes or until Brussels sprouts are browned and crispy, stirring every 10 minutes. Add butter to skillet; stir until completely coated. Stir in bacon; season with additional salt and pepper, as needed.

  • If Grace was an Ocean

My story is filled with broken pieces, terrible choices, and very ugly truths. But it's also filled with a major comeback, peace in my soul, and a grace that saved my life. . . . . I opened FB this morning and my FB memories were waiting for me, and boy are they some happy, funny, humbling ones! Today is my (re)birth day! Eleven years ago, I stood in front of our (then) church, rededicating my life to God. Some ask WHY I would do that, growing up in the church, having always gone, went to private school, etc. It was because, for the first time in my life, I had developed a personal relationship with God. The only "drawback" that day was letting Shawn Storey and JW be the ones who baptized me. 😂🤣😶 The last 11 years my faith has grown exponentially, in ways I could never have imagined. It has also been tested to the core of my very being. I have been healed of things that have happened to me, have had shackles and strongholds released from me, but have come to learn that noone and nothing can separate me from the love God feels for me. Two of the greatest gifts that have come along this journey were watching Annie step forward a few years later and dedicate her own life and the Sunday morning I not only heard but felt God's unconditional love for me for the first time. It literally dropped me to my knees (which I also have a nice scar, thanks to my brother, Shawn). I have found a joy that noone or nothing can take away because my heart and soul belong to Him. My spirit rejoices each morning I awake and each evening I lay down, no matter the burden I carry. I hope each and every day that I continue to learn more about His unconditional love, grace, and mercy, but also how to best use the gifts he's given me. People ask me, "how can your faith be so strong with everything you've been through in your life?" My only response is, "it's because OF everything I've been through in my life that my faith is so strong." I have come to learn that God created me to be me - big hearted, sassy, high spirited, loving, nerdy me - and I'm ok with that! I am looking forward to the next eleven years and seeing how God works in my life! It's a beautiful day to start a fresh page in your book ... live, laugh, love, dream, believe, create BIG and boldly! Peace, love, and pie! Love y'all! • I thrive on 3 things: Jesus, turquoise, and sunshine

Yes, it's an old photo, but when Miss Montana captures a photo of you living your best life, well... My big sister, who's a SM guru, gets on me because I don't post enough, post too much, not at the right time, not personal enough. Am I the only one who misses when SM was organic. And you just posted because you had something to share, that you thought others liked? 2020 has been a struggle for so many I know. Financially, mentally, physically, spiritually. I've been beyond blessed that I have an amazing "big girl" job, a kick ass tribe, great friends, a sense of humor. But we haven't been without business issues. Unable to purchase some of our favorite fabrics, my custom printer (for wild rags) deemed essential and have spent the last 5 months making masks, shows and events canceled. So I have to give a big shout to everyone for sticking by us as we press forward. And for liking our stuff on SM because we know it's hit or miss sometimes. And in case I forgot to introduce myself, I'm Red. Or Momma Red. Sassy Ass. I'm a tried and true Texan and west Texas is my home, where my soul resides. I'm the resident hug giver, pie baker, wild rag maker. I thrive on 3 things: Jesus, turquoise, and sunshine. I hope y'all stick around, pull up a chair and sit a spell because things are about to get really real around here. Plus, we've got some big things in store, God willing and the creek don't rise. Big love, Red

  • Who Are You?

"She had a way of pulling herself back together into something that was unstoppable. " JmStorm 5 days in the high desert, standing barefoot in the Rio Grande, staring up at Santa Elena Canyon in absolute awe of God's handwork, I finally decided to own who, and how, God created me to be. Let me tell you, it wasn't an easy pill to swallow. I've spent most of my life as a people pleaser. I do not like conflict. I've always been the "yes" man. If it meant making other people happy, lightening their load, or brought them peace... I would set myself on fire to keep them warm. Yeah, God created me to be a helper, a nurturer, a lover, a light giver. A storyteller. Wordsmith. He didn't create me to be an enabler or a door mat. He has filled my live with joy and my heart with love. The kind of peace I finally have can only come from one place. Doors flew off the hinges this weekend as I I picked back up the title of daughter of the most high king. Divinely created. Unconditionally loved. Tender hearted. Passionate. Kind. Full of grace. Compassion. All gifts from him that aren't bad things to possess in these times. My worth can only be found in one place. Self worth comes from God. Not from one's achievements. Not from people. Not from outward appearances. Not from materialistic possessions. But from God alone. My prayer tonight is that you find your peace and let go of the things that are not from him that are weighing you down. Sending big love. Red Today's VOD: GOD, my shepherd! I don’t need a thing. You have bedded me down in lush meadows, you find me quiet pools to drink from. True to your word, you let me catch my breath and send me in the right direction. Psalm 23:1-2 MSG

  • Dear Cowgirl Shoutout

I finally have a copy of Dear Cowgirl (thanks to the person who gifted it to me). Let me 1st say how proud I am of Adrian. I've watched her grow the last decade from a bronc ridin', National anthem singin' young girl to a passionate, life changing woman. I am so so proud of you sweet girl! I love you big. Thank you for the years of support, friendship, and encouragement. A few years ago, with the encouragement of my then better half, decided to write my story as part of a bigger book. A collection of stories from women who were warriors, champions. While he didn't cause any of the trauma I had experienced in my life, he wholeheartedly supported me though writing about it. I explained that I would be sharing things that were highly sensitive and private and I couldn't write it if he couldn't handle it. His words were, you have a story that needs to be told. It took one person though to cause me to close the notebook and not write. One person I didn't even really know to feel shame and embarrassment. I put the pen away and the project. Thank you Adrian for your vulnerability, your courage, your heart, and your transparency. I have picked up the pen again and hope to be finished this time next year. Not only am I working on this very personal project, I've been writing another book (which is very near and dear) titled, Mountain of Gold. Don't ever shrink yourself because of what people think. You have a purpose and a place on this earth. Love, Red #flyingsrcustomworks #keepinthewestwild #liveyourlegacy #dearcowgirl

  • Hat Etiquette

From our friends at Matador Ranch: Hat Etiquette Do you know the proper hat etiquette? Our employees at the Matador Ranch do. The popularity and function of headwear in society has changed significantly over time, and consequently, so has hat etiquette. Please refer to the guidelines below to better understand proper hat-wearing behavior. Men Can Leave Hats On When: •They are outside •At an athletic event, indoors or out •In public buildings like post offices, airports, or hotels •On public transportation •In elevators Men Should Take Off Hats When: •They are sitting down to eat a meal •In a house of worship unless required by religion •Public buildings like schools, town halls, and libraries •When the National Anthem is playing •In restaurants and cafes 🤠🤠🤠 We'd like to add: • Removing or tipping hat when greeting a lady or elder •At the dinner table (And being from west Texas, I truly appreciate when a man takes off his hat while dancing.) • I'm Thankful for You

Well, we're in this for another month, so I am going to shift our content for April a bit. A few years ago, one of my best gal pals gifted this to me. It currently hangs in our kitchen, but became a catch all for postcards, receipts, and what not. I cleaned it off, and starting today, for the month of April, I am going to give thanks in all things and find a positive to share with y'all. Today, I am thankful for you, your support, your prayers, encouragement, purchases, patience, and grace. We've got a few outstanding custom orders I'm working to fill. All our material is purchased locally. I use small businesses and/or businesses in the US to custom print wild rags and tees. Because of this, I don't have an abundance of inventory at this time BUT will have everyone's orders ASAP and with a huge coupon discount for future orders. While the news may portray civil unrest or uncivilized people, what I am seeing in the communities in which we have a vested interest is a sense of family, taking care of each other, supporting one another, and helping when needed. I have never been prouder to be an American. Born and raised in Texas. Small business owner. Family owned and operated. Dream chaser. Love giver. Hope dealer. We've got some AMAZING cowboys (and cowgirls) lined up for some photo shoots when we can finally congregate, and hope you'll continue to tag along as we strive to keep the west wild! Keepin' the west wild! Red #flyingsrcustomworks #flyingsr #cowboylife #ranchlife #westernlife #cowboys #wildrags #wildragslides #liveyourlegacy #keepinthewestwild #day1ofgivingthanks

  • The Power of Smudging

You are probably thinking, what is she talking about? If you already have your sage and smudging feather, good on ya! If you have no idea what I am talking about, I welcome you to pull up a chair and sit a spell. Smudging, or other rites involving the burning of sacred herbs or resins, is a ceremony practiced by some Indigenous peoples of the Americas. In some cases the ceremony is for spiritual cleansing or blessing, but the purposes and particulars of the ceremonies, and the substances used, can vary widely between tribes, bands and nations. While several well-known cultures may use forms of sage (for example, common sage or white sage) and cedar that is local to their region, the use of sage is neither universal, nor as widespread as was once commonly believed (Wikipedia, 2020). A quick Google search can answer many of your questions (here are just a few): ? What does it mean to smudge your house? The smudging ceremony is a Native American tradition that cleanses bad feelings and negative spirits from houses. Smudging is done by burning specific dried herbs and letting the smoke float around the house. How often should you smudge? There's not a set certain amount of times you should smudge. If you feel negative energy, vibes etc.. it may be helpful to do a cleansing of your home. I would recommend a Seasonal cleansing: four times a year when the seasons change. What is the purpose of a smudge? Smudging connects people to the Creator and provides communities with a way to gain spiritual protection and blessings, as well as to improve spiritual health. The smoke created by burning sacred herbs is thought to purify the body and soul, and bring clarity to the mind. Can you smudge a person? The person being smudged pulls the smoke to them and gently inhales the smoke. ... A person can smudge themselves, or, someone can lead a smudge by holding the container and directing the smoke over others. I have been blessed to have grown up with the art of smudging. In her younger years, my mother spent time working on a reservation in northern New Mexico. If you know me, you know my mother was quite the nomad, always learning about other cultures, religious practices and beliefs, and fully immersing herself in the culture wherever she lived. Pictured to the right is my smudging stick and feather (from Of a Muse), an antique jar I acquired along the way, feathers from a local ranch, and my great-grandmother's rosary beads that she used during World War II (my great uncle served and was killed in action). With the outbreak of disease and a sense of fear this week, I will be smudging the house (and myself) this week. My go to store for sage is also owned by one of my favorite gal pals and girlfriends: Of a Muse. You can order everything you need and they will ship it straight to you. Not only does smudging have health benefits (such as keeping away harmful germs and viruses), for me personally it brings a sense of peace and tranquility. I would love to hear if you smudge: if you do, what do you use (I use sage), and what sort of experiences have you had. Keepin' the west wild! • Nellie Cashman, The Angel of Tombstone

Ellen "Nellie" Cashman (1845 – January 4, 1925), better known as Nellie Cashman, became noted across the American West and in western Canada as a nurse, restaurateur, businesswoman, Roman Catholic philanthropist in Arizona, and gold prospector in Alaska. A native of County Cork, Ireland, she and her sister were brought as young children to the United States by their mother about 1850 to escape the poverty of the Great Famine. The family lived first in Boston, Massachusetts, where the girls also worked until old enough, before migrating to San Francisco, California, in 1865. Cashman established her first boarding house for miners in Pioche, Nevada. She then set up a boarding house serving miners of the Cassiar gold mine in British Columbia. When she returned to Victoria, British Columbia, upon hearing of miners starving back in the Cassiar Mountains, she led a rescue party back to the gold mine, earning her the nickname "Angel of the Cassiar". After moving to Tombstone, Arizona, c. 1880, Cashman raised money to build the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and did charitable work with the Sisters of St. Joseph. She successfully reared the five children of her sister Fanny after they were orphaned in 1883. In the late 1880s, Cashman set up several restaurants and boardinghouses in Arizona. In 1898 she went to the Yukon during the Klondike Gold Rush for gold prospecting, working there until 1905. She became nationally known as a frontierswoman, with the Associated Press covering a later trip. In 2006 Cashman was inducted into the Alaska Mining Hall of Fame. The 1959–1960 season of the ABC western television series, The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp, with Hugh O'Brian starring as Wyatt Earp, featured a fictional character based on Nellie Cashman played by actress Randy Stuart. On October 18, 1994, Cashman was featured on a United States postage stamp as part of the Legends of the West series. In 2007, she was inducted into the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame in Fort Worth, Texas.
